Mark is considered the earliest of the four gospels. In fact, the other synoptic gospels Matthew & Luke depend heavily on it as a source. This past century, scholars have focused so much on this gospel (compared to the other ones) that one scholar says its popularity among scholars has reached almost "celebrity proportions." In this intensive course, you will learn how Mark takes us deep into the historical Jesus, about the mysterious "messianic secret", the significance of the title "Son of God", what a "markan sandwich" is, about Mark's keen use of irony throughout, Jesus's profound and incisive knowledge into the human condition, and so on. We will proceed chapter by chapter to unpack and to learn from Jesus's words themselves, and by the end of the course you will have a much more profound grasp of what many scholars call one of the most important books in the New Testament.
