A week ago, Hurricane Mathew struck Haiti, leaving a country devastated in its wake. Countless homes have been destroyed and more than a thousand have died due to the storm. The UN estimates 1.4 million people are in need of assistance. Haiti had not yet recovered from the major earthquake in 2010 and now has been hit again with another wide-scale natural disaster. As a church, New Mercy is working with the organization Providing Health in Haiti (PHH). PHH entered Haiti in the aftermath of the 2010 earthquake and has since remained on the ground. PHH’s mission is to improve the health of the people in Haiti by educating nurses to become nurse practitioners who can then provide much needed primary medical care. In addition, they are building an orphanage for displaced children. PHH is in contact with those most heavily affected by Hurricane Matthew and can provide help where most needed.
We are asking for your prayers and donations of clothing. As the season is changing and you find yourself reorganizing your closets, we ask that you think of Haiti and consider making a donation. They are in need of adult and children’s clothing. We are will start collecting today and for the next two weeks. There will be a box for donations near the welcoming desk on Sundays and at the Hub throughout the week. If you have any questions, please contact me or anyone on the Justice and Mercy team.
