A devastating famine has been declared in South Sudan...
...which is spilling over rapidly to surrounding regions (Somalia, Nigeria, Yemen). This is the first time famine has been declared anywhere on the globe since 2011.
The UN issued a statement warning that "the world is facing the worst humanitarian crisis [in which the UN has intervened] since the UN was founded in 1945."
Thousands of people (many of them children) are dying every day and hundreds of thousands are at risk of dying. For comparison, in 2011 over 250,000 people died in Somalia alone. The potential scale of devastation for the current famine is much higher.
The Justice & Mercy Team wants to encourage the brothers and sisters at New Mercy to be a part of the global effort to save lives in this crisis. We will match donations dollar for dollar for the first $500 donated. Of course, we want to go above and beyond that, so if we exceed that amount, even better.
All proceeds will go toward Action Against Hunger (which received a four-star rating on Charity Navigator). Donations will enable them to provide "lifesaving treatment to severely malnourished children and delivering emergency food and clean water to families in dire need".
“Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?’
“The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’ -Matthew 25:37-40
